What IS acne?

Millions of people all over the world suffer from this terrible skin disease, so it is very important that we know exactly what is acne. Now lets get simple. If you look all over your skin there are many tiny holes called pores or hair follicles. These pores contains a very important gland called the sebaceous gland otherwise known as the oil glands. The function of this gland is to produce an oily substance called sebum that moistens your hair and skin.

Like most things that are good, when they are in excess they can cause problems. Now it is the same scenario with the sebaceous glands producing oils. Whenever the sebaceous gland produces an excess of sebum, it accumulates and become thick and sticky. This sticky substance will now clog the pores and in so doing traps bacteria and other dirt particles.

Dirt and bacteria are foreign to your body. Therefore when your body detects these foreign materials its natural function is to try and get rid of them. Your body's defense system will send out an army of white blood cells which will kill the bacteria. The dead bacteria and dirt are mixed together and form what we call puss. It will migrate to the surface of the skin where it will leave through the formation of an acne pimple.
